Research Interests

Geoarchaeology and archaeometallurgy of Iron

Research interests centre on the investigation of the technology of early iron-making and the nature of the exploited resources.

Experimental iron-making

To aid the research into early iron-making technology, a reconstruction bloomery has been built at the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans.

The Miskin Project

A long-term investigation of the exploitation of the mineral resources of the Miskin area, near Llantrisant, Glamorgan, including iron and lead working from Roman times until the 19th century.

Archaeology of Llandaff

Watching brief work followed by research excavation in Llandaff are revealing evidence for the Medieval and Post-Medieval development of the area, including the probable location of one of the elusive kilns producing "Vale Ware" in the 14th century.

Geology of Iron Resources

Research into the origin of iron ores includes a long-standing interest in ooidal ironstones, as well as the current activities in the Bristol Channel haematite/goethite orefield.
