Lanelay fach

The probable location of the short-lived blast furnace built c.1596 on the property of George Mathew, has been identified to the north-west of the former property of Lanelay Fach. Remains of a furnace near this location existed in the 19th century (Morgan, 1898), but have now vanished. A very substantial leat has, however, now been recognised, and is traceable from ST 0348 8322, having arisen from the Nant Muchudd farther to the NE, through Coed Lanelay Fach, and along the rear of the properties on the east side of Forest Walk. The leat appears to terminate approximately where its line is crossed by Forest Walk (ST 0328 8282), and it is likely the furnace may have stood immediately to the south of this location, on the lower ground of the Ely floodplain, within the grounds of Lanelay Fach. In Coed Lanelay Fach the leat bank yields small pieces of slag, particularly a bright blue fuel ash slag.
